Move around, zoom in, and keep your whole idea in view.

Hold Space and drag to pan. You can also select the hand tool with H, use the middle mouse button, or scroll with a trackpad.
Get closer, step back
Pinch on a trackpad, or hold your primary modifier while scrolling to zoom around the cursor. Use Ctrl/⌘++ and Ctrl/⌘+− to zoom by keyboard. Ctrl/⌘+0 returns to the default zoom level.
Find the bigger picture
Use Shift+1 to fit your content into view. Click a frame in the frame list to select it and jump to its area. A frame is a view into the same canvas, not a separate document.
